[Question #13931] HIV - Kiss

Hello Doctors

Please can you help me?

Tonight I have been out for drinks with my team from the office. Our boss is very open about his sex life and he admits that he often schedules nights with sex workers / prostitutes.

Tonight he asked one to attend the bar.

Out of politeness, we all said hello and engaged in standard etiquette of two kisses on the cheek and a handshake. However, I mis-timed my movements and accidentally ended up kissing the prostitute on the lips (not open-mouth).

I went to the bathroom to wipe my lip with water and a towel.

My worry is that I can’t remember if I licked my lip before heading to the bathroom. As of yesterday, I had an abscess drained and it is still tender in my mouth.

From reading the forum, HIV is only transmitted by unprotected penetrative sex, shared needles; and massive blood exposure (e.g. a stabbing victim).

Am I worrying for nothing?

Thank you

Welcome to the Forum.  Thanks for your questions and your implied confidence in our service.  I'll be glad to comment.

I agree with you that you have NOTHING to worry about.  It is unlikely that the woman you met had HIV or any other STI- most commercial sex workers do not.  Further HIV and other STIs are not transmitted through touching, handshakes or a kiss on the cheek.  There is no reason to worry and no scientific reason for testing of any sort. I encourage you to put any concerns you might have aside and move forward without concern.  EWH

Hello Doctor Hook

Thank you for your prompt reply.

Apologies, but in my post I said that I kissed the sex worker on the lips by mistake, not her cheek.

As mentioned, my worry is that I licked my lips straight away before heading to the bathroom to wash them. As of yesterday, I had a gum abscess drained and it is still tender in my mouth and it has not healed.

Do I still have NOTHING to worry about regarding HIV and can I move on without any worries at all?

I take your comments onboard that she may not have had HIV or an STI. This question is based on IF she was positive as I do not know her.

Thank you

I’m sorry that you continue to worry.  HIV and other STIs are not transmitted through kissing on the lips either.  These infections are harder to transmit than you think.  No reason for concern and no reason for testing.  Please don’t worry.  EWH

Hello Doctor

Thanks for the clarity.

So as I understand correctly, overall:

If I licked my lips which may have had her saliva, blood or genital fluids on, this was still no risk for HIV? (even with the ulcer in my mouth).

I appreciate that this is the last post before the thread is closed.

Thanks for your assistance.

This is repetitive.  Repeating your questions is not going to change my assessment.   No risk means no risk.  Not if you had an ulcer on your mouth, not if you licked your lips, not if you have dental or gum disease, not if she had dental or gum diseases.  You need to figure out how to move forward.  No risk means no risk.

End of thread. EWH
