[Question #14033] Is HPV contagious after 20 years?

I have had clear paps and HPV test for 20 years.  I had a LEEP in 2001.  What are the chances I can still transmit HPV?  What do I need to tell any future partners?

Welcome to the forum. Thank you for your confidence in our services.

Unfortunately, there are no data on which to base an answer to your question. It is generally assumed that if a genital test for HPV DNA is positive, that type of HPV can be sexually transmitted to partners; and if negative, transmission is unlikely. Having had negative HPV tests for 20 years, you can safely assume you do not have a transmissible HPV infection at this time.

From the standpoint of HPV prevention, you should say nothing to your current or future sex partner(s). Of course some prospective partners discuss past partnerships and STIs with each other but in this situation that's a relationship issue that might convey respect, but doesn't relate to health safety.

I hope these comments are helpful. Let me know if anything isn't clear.
