[Question #14062] Oral MSM Concern

Hello,
I had a lapse in judgement last night after a few drinks and engaged in oral sex with another man, both giving/receiving. He also rimmed me and briefly touched his penis to my anus. No insertive sex. We did not ejaculate orally. He did say he’s on prep. I’m really scared. What are my risks for STIs and HIV? Should I get tested now? Im married and scared what might happen to my health.

Welcome back to our Forum and thanks for your continued support.  This was a low risk encounter.  These questions are similar to questions you have asked previously and the answers are the same.  I suggest you review your previous interactions with Dr. Handsfield and me for further information.

If he was on PrEP he is HIV negative.  Further, there are no proven cases of HIV acquired from receipt of oral sex or rimming.  In the unlikely event that he has untreated HIV your risk for infection from performing oral sex on him is less than 1 in 10,000.  I would not worry about HIV.

There is a small risk for other STIs such as gonorrhea and an even smaller risk for chlamydia or syphilis.  As per our prior interactions, testing for gonorrhea and chlamydia will be reliable at 3-4 days after your encounter.  Syphilis risk is very small but will not be conclusive until 4-6 weeks.

I would not be worried, particularly if your gonorrhea testing is negative.  EWH

Hi,

This will probably count as a follow up but wanted to again ask for your thoughts on testing given the scenario I presented. Would you recommend it or am I being too anxious?

Sorry for the delayed response.  Testing is always a personal decision.  As explained above, the encounter you described was low risk and in your position I would not bother to test.  OTOH, you are obviously anxious.  A negative urine test for gonorrhea (chlamydia testing is typical done on the same specimen) would be further evidence that you need not worr.

One follow up remaining.  EWH
