[Question #1605] Genital Herpes

My boyfriend and I are entering into a long term relationship. I asked him to be tested for STD's to which he agreed, having experienced no apparent issues. Blood tests indicated he has herpes 2, no other STD's and is also negative for herpes 1. He has no other medical conditions nor is he on any medications. Surprised, he thinks the genesis was what seemed to be a hemorrhoid nearly a year ago. No recurring symptoms have appeared since the initial occurrence. Upon positive results, he started taking Valacyclovir for daily suppression over a month ago, is willing to use a condom and to wash genital area prior to intercourse.
I remain extremely concerned, even fearful about transmission as I am STD free and wish to remain that way. What are the chances of transmission to me if we move forward and is there anything else that can be done in addition to the above mentioned precautions to prevent transmission. What can you tell me and what other suggestions might you have?

Let me ask you a few questions first, just to be as clear as possible. Do you know if he had an IgG or and IgM test? If IgG, do you know the index value of the positive result? That is a number associated with the result - something like 3.5 or 1.8, some number like that. It might also read something like >5. Sometimes there are false positives on these tests and I want to be certain that he doesn't fall into the range of 1.1 to 3.5, where there are some false positives.
I assume you were also tested for herpes?
