[Question #2065] HIV Risk from Fingering

I am a 36 year old female from Trinidad (Caribbean). I was making out with a long term friend. He masturbated himself with his left hand for about 5 minutes, during which there was pre-cum secretions (that he wiped away intermittently with his same hand on on his t-shirt. He did this while his right hand rubbed my vagina with my underwear on. After about the 5 minute period he took off my panties and performed oral sex on me, during which he fingered my vagina (with the left hand he used to masturbate himself with and was exposed to his pre-cum).
Does this expose me to HIV if there was any traces of precum on his finger? I'm very paranoid about this occurrence.

Welcome to the Forum I'll be glad to comment. The activities you describe (masturbation and receipt of oral sex) are virtually no risk events (more on this below) and since you do not mention it, I suspect you do not know your partner's HIV status. If that is the case, it is unlikely that he is infected- only about 1.3% of persons living in Trinidad have HIV. When you factor into this the fact that mutual masturbation is considered safe sex, even when partners get each others' genital secretions on one another, and that there are no cases that I am aware of when HIV has been transmitted to a woman by a man performing oral sex on her, I would characterize this encounter as no risk. From a medical perspective, I see no reason for concern or for testing related to the events you describe. I hope this comment is helpful to you. If some of this is unclear, feel free to ask a follow-up question. EWH

Thank you so much Doctor. He indicated he is HIV Negative André has always been open and trustworthy with me for the many years I've known him. However the paranoid person I am, his assurances gave me very little comfort. I am okay with the receipt of the oral sex. It was fingering specifically that got me nervous because of the precum drippings I saw on his hand before he inserted his finger in me.

I also wanted a bit of reassurance that if by a long shot his semen in fact had the HIV virus that it would have died upon exposure to air, i.e. before he actually inserted his finger in my vagina.
PS (Sorry about the reference to the word "Andre" in my first follow up question. It wasn't referencing a name, it was a typo)

I congratulate on your "paranoia" you're practicing safe sex. It will keep you healthy. There is no reason to worry about the events you described. I was aware that there was pre-ejaculate on his fingers when he inserted them into your vagina. Even so any HIV which might have been present would have been noninfectious due to exposure to the air before he inserted his fingers. This was a no risk event. Please don't worry. EWH---
