[Question #2306] Transmitting herpes by eating at a restaurant

Hi,

I currently have an active cold sore on my lips and I'm just wondering if I can transmit the virus to others if I eat at I restaurant or something? Can it be transmitted via cups and utensils?

You cannot transmit the virus to others through utensils, no.  You can however, transmit the virus by kissing others on the lips and by giving someone oral sex.  Things like spoons and forks and glasses just do not have the requirements necessary for the virus to live plus very little virus would be transferred to an inanimate object like utensils.  I do suggest that people don't share lipsticks or lip gloss as that substance can stay moist and more virus might be present on a lipstick that is rubbed back and forth on the lip.  Please let me know what other questions you might have about your oral herpes infection.
