[Question #2307] HSV

Dear,

I've hsv1 G .. 2,5 years ago the initial ob and after that none. Like i've said earlier unfortunately, there's not one day since .. that i didn't think, search for or read about it. I'm like obsessively checking the private area every day.

The thing is i'm also very anxious to catch type 2. Yesterday i went to my physio therapist, for my pelvic issues. She wanted to make an (outside) echo  and she used a towel , which was between my underwear and vagina (mons pubis). After using , she put it back in the closet. I'm sure that wasn't the laundry basket. My whole theory doesn't matter anyway.. the question is; let's say it was a "dirty towel" indeed. Is it possible to contract hsv2 in this way?

For example the person before me had hsv2 on her public area and after that the towel touched my public area. Or is this not possible?

Kind regards.

No, this is not a method of transmission, even if the person before you happened to be infected.  My guess is that there is some sort of laundry thing going on with things that are put in the closet.

Thnx terri. Yeah normally it is, but this time i'm pretty sure she put it back on the stack to use... She normally used these same two towels to put under your  legs during the therapy. So again, if the person before me had an ob in her public area .. and the ob touched the towel and after ,the towel touched my public area.. then transmission is not possible???
Then two other questions:

  1. I know i need some help with this. Because right now the virus is taking over my life. I'm afraid to infect my baby from 11 months (so a stressed and sad mother) afraid to infect my boyfriend (so a bad girlfriend because i avoid sex with him). You must have seen comparable cases like mine? What do you recommend for searching help? I don't know where to start? (A std specialist? A virilologist? A psychologist?) Hope you have a good suggestion!
  2. In case a person with hsv is on suppresive medicine: how long you can take them? Is it bad for your health? Is an ob excluded when taking suppresive meds?
Thnx in advance!

Even if the person before you had herpes in her pubic hair (a very unusual place to have an outbreak), this would not make the towel infectious - it just isn't the right kind of contact to spread the virus.  If you are concerned about this I think you should call the office and ask about this.
I have seen cases of people whose lives have been taken over by worrying about contracting herpes, yes, most assuredly.  I always recommend a cognitive behavior therapist for this issue and if bad enough, OCD medicine.

If a person is going to take suppression, they can take it for an unlimited amount of time, with the knowledge we have about the medicine now and since 1982.  It is not bad for your health, no.  I don't know what you mean by is an OB excluded?

Good to know this is not a way of transmission, and that it's rarely that it will appear on the pubic area. Also for me with the HSV1G, then i know there's a big change that it's just ingrown hairs or shave irritation if i see something there. Are towels a way of transmission anyway? (in general)

I will search for a cognitive behavior therapist, and for me it's not only contracting hsv (2) but mostly the fear that i will have another hsv1g outbreak.

What i meant with excluded is ; if you are on suppresive meds, you can't get an outbreak???

Thanks for your time Terri!

If you are on suppressive medicine, it is far less likely that you will have an outbreak especially since you have HSV 1 - even without suppressive medication, you may never have another outbreak.  And if you do have another outbreak, it will not be as severe as the first one, in the vast majority of people.
We suggest that people use their own towels for showering and drying as a wet, warm towel, used to dry the genital directly, could have some tiny change of transferring virus, because of the way that it is used, it's warmth and wetness.  There are no documented cases of towel transmission, however.

It is the policy of this forum that repeated anxiety driven questions are discouraged.  I hope that I have answered your questions adequately enough that you will not need to post further questions.
