[Question #2467] HSV Question

Hi there, question regarding HSV-2. I had unprotected oral from a Hispanic massage therapist for a minute or so followed by condom protected vagina intercourse about 15 weeks ago. On Friday July 14th(again 15 weeks later) i notices a small (pin head sized or so) bump that i ended up popping on the mid shaft of penis. Didn't really notice any excretion and seemed all healed up 2-3 days later on Monday the 17th.  It wasn't really painful nor did it burn or tingle. No other symptoms of any kind either. Is there any worry for HSV-2 or any other STD for that matter that I should be tested for? Greatly appreciated!

The fact that you had only unprotected oral sex but protected intercourse makes me a lot less concerned about HSV 2.  Have you ever in your life had a cold sore on  your lip or in your nose?  If yes, then it is also very unlikely that you would contract HSV 1 from the unprotected oral sex.  Also, herpes lesions generally do not appear as small as a pin head - they are generally larger and often in groups.  I don't think that STD testing is necessary here and neither is herpes testing unless you just cannot stop worrying about the encounter.

Thanks for the reply. Just wanted to follow up as I am an extreme worrier. Do herpe sores usually clear up in a couple days like the pimple like bump I had? It seems to me that they are typically painful and create ulcer like openings and last quite a long time. Just need a tad more reassurance. Much appreciated!!

You didn't answer my question about any history of previous cold sores.  Have you had them?
Herpes lesions can last anywhere from 3-14 days, in my experience, sometimes even longer with first infection and no medication.
Many lesions are tender, yes, not every one.  If you have an open sore on your penis, you should have it swab tested for herpes.

Thank you Terri, I do recall having mouth sores but don't know if they were cold sores. That said, I am planning on heading in for a blood test and please note, my dates were off and it was 10 weeks since the encounter, not 15 weeks. Would a blood test be reliable at this point?

We like 12 weeks from the date of the encounter before testing for the last and final test.
Mouth sores are generally canker sores, not caused by herpes.  Herpes lesions normally but not always appear on the border of the lip or in the nose.
Thank you for your questions.

Much appreciated again Terri, what would be the best test to confirm I am clear of HSV 1 or 2?

The IgG type specific antibody test for HSV 1 or 2, or for the absolute best test, the herpes western blot
