[Question #249] Herpes 2

Had unprotected vaginal intercourse 9-10weeks ago one time. I got a herpes IGG test at 2 weeks and 8 weeks both have been negative. My first test was .26 for HSV 2 then my second at the 8 week mark was .34. Should I be concerned in the increase? And what are my chances at this point I could test positive at 12 weeks? And should I test again after 12 weeks ? which would be 4 times. I have had sex with my gf now just this week unprotected vaginal a few times. Is there a chance I gave it to her if I wind up positive in the future at 12 weeks and beyond?

It is normal for the negatives to vary somewhat - they will almost never be exactly the same.  I'm not worried about that slight increase at all.  We always recommend that a person do a final HSV 2 test at 12 weeks past any exposure for maximum certainty.  I doubt that you will test positive at 12 weeks, honestly.  I doubt that you will give her herpes at this point, no.

So most likely if I were to already have the virus I would at least have some sort of symptom? I have had some anxiety over this and felt like I was suffering from prodrome but I heard that doesn't happen for initial infection just recurrent ones? Other then that no symptoms. What are the chances for getting herpes 2 from a one time encounter vaginally with no lesions present? I would assume the risk goes up if you keep having unprotected sex with someone who has herpes 2. I have also heard stories that an average couple has a 5 percent chance of giving herpes to the one who doesn't have over the course of a year. Which way transmission from male to female or female to male easiest to contract? Sorry for all the questions

The chances of getting HSV 2 from a one time encounter is really low - I cannot give you an exact number here.  And yes of course, the risk goes up if there is no condom used and if the person has HSV 2.  Do you have any way of asking the person if they would be willing to test for HSV 2 to help yourself resolve these concerns?  Infected male to uninfected female results in the most transmission.

No I don't and she most likely will not test anyway. She did say she was clean but I don't take her word for it with something like herpes and most people don't know they have it. She lives in a different state and by the time she would get around to get tested I'll be at my 12 week mark. She didnt have any lesions but I heard she could still have been "shedding" inside her vagina. How often does a person do this and what are the chances she would then transmit it to me? I haven't had any symptoms just anxiety. I do have somewhat of a burning sensation in my inner thighs but no sores or blisters. Could this be prodrome or signs of a pre outbreak? I asked it in my last question. It's probably just anxiety

People with HSV 2 shed on about 13 out of 100 days.  So the likelihood that even if she had herpes you would hit it on that day seems unlikely to me.  And not every time someone sheds, are they shedding enough to virus to infect someone else.  I seriously doubt that burning in your inner thighs is a sign of herpes without any blisters or sores.  I think it is more likely anxiety.  Its amazing how our minds can influence our bodies, don't you think, Robert?
