[Question #2495] Herpes 1&2 testing

Hi Terri,

I have tested for herpes 1&2 at 4 days short of 6 weeks and canes back as negative. Now I am on my 11th week and planning to take one final test at 12 weeks. But something has come up and I need to travel so wondering if I take test at 11 weeks 3 days, can I consider it conclusive? What do you recommend? Till now I did not have any symptoms of herpes, everything is normal.

Thanks Terri. I will update you with my results. Also just wondering what is the rate of false positives with IGG. And will HIV also be conclusive. Sorry if it's repetitive. Just want to make sure. Thanks. This will be last question . I will post my results later this week.

Our clinic studies the false positive rate on the IgG test over a period of seven years of data, comparing IgG to herpes western blot.  When comparing the two, 5.5% of people testing in total fell into the low positive range (1.1 to 3.5), where the majority of the false positives occur.  Western blot is recommended for confirmation in everyone who tests positive in that range.  Approximately 50% of those who tested in that range who had western blots done were determined to be falsely positive.  So that means that overall, about 2.7% of those who tested positive were falsely positive.  I think there are probably a few people who tested positive above 3.5 that are falsely positive, but our statistic suggest very few.  So after seven years of collecting, data, we determine, in our practice, the false positive rate to be about 2.7%.

Hi Terri,

Hope you are doing good. I think I have a good news. I got tested at 11 weeks 3 days and all STDs including hsv1&2 are negative. Just FYI my exposure is unprotected oral sex and protected vaginal. And this is my first and only exposure. I never had any cold sore in my life. Am I safe. My IGG levels were same they did not increase or decrease.

The IgG test is 70% sensitive for HSV 1 and 92% sensitive for HSV 2, by our last study involving over 700 patients.  You have great news - I only want you to know these numbers.  If this is your first and only exposure, I believe that you can believe these results!
