[Question #250] Herpes transmission

A person with whom I had sex the end of September called to say about a week later he had a lot of itching and found out he had a uniary tract infection. He was given an antibiotic. He took it for 7 days and was fine.  He does know I have herpes. Could this have been herpes?

Hi JR,
Did he have any sores?  Did he say what testing if any was done?  It is unusual for men to have an actual urinary tract infection but it is certainly possible that he had urethritis which is most often a sexually transmitted infection and would mean you should be treated as well, as a contact to him.  While this could be herpes in his urethra, that seems less likely than a urethral infection caused by something else.  I think you need more information from him if possible and you also need to get checked out yourself, with your provider knowing that you had a partner that was treated for a urinary tract infection.  It would be useful to know also what your partner was treated with to help sort this out a bit more.

JR, we make mistakes, it's part of being human.  Fortunately we can fix some of them as I hope you will here.
