[Question #2681] Strange situation with package

I have a very strange situation that I believe is no risk but I was nervous enough that I wanted to check with you.

Yesterday I received an order from amazon that included two “blender bottles”. Strangely, one of the blender bottles was not in plastic wrapping. In fact, when we opened it up, the “shaker ball” inside the bottle was also no packaged (it was packaged in the other bottle) and there was liquid (probably two or three ounces of liquid) in the bottom of the bottle. There was also some dark residue throughout the bottle and on the brim of the bottle. I emailed amazon and they apologized and refunded my money and told me I can keep or throw away the bottle.

I worried, what if this liquid was blood (It was dark in the kitchen when we opened and I knew it was liquid but not what kind) or if there was other HIV secretions in the bottle that somehow got on me or my girlfriend. I was especially worried because we had sex after we put the blender bottle into the dishwasher and I worried perhaps HIV secretions got onto one of us. I know that HIV is fragile but I worried that since the bottle was closed it may be a protected environment. Of course the package was shipped to me so it would have probably been at least half a day (and probably a lot more, like two or three days) from the time the blender bottle with the liquid was put into the package and shipped to me and the time we opened it.

If you can’t tell, I have previously been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder.  I feel somewhat confident this is no risk but at the same time I am freaked out getting a used, liquid filled blender bottle and I would like your assessment that this is no risk to me or my girlfriend and no need to test.

Also, I assume that after we wash the bottle in the washing machine it would be safe to use.

Welcome to the Forum.  I agree with you on your points that what you received in the mail from Amazon was most unusual and, more importantly, that the situation you describe was a no risk event in terms of HIV, hepatitis or other blood borne infections.  Even if the liquid was blood (and honestly, you would have known this, no matter how dark the apartment was), no virus would have survive during the time that your package was in transit to your home.  Further, even if you had somehow gotten whatever was in the bottle on your hands, there is no risk that you or your partner might have become infected through the transfer of secretions or whatever material was in the bottle.

After washing in a dishwasher, the bottle should be safe to use.  I would not worry a bit about the possibility of infection and not only see no medical reason for concern but I see no reason for testing related to this incident either.  I hope my comments will be helpful to you.  EWH
