[Question #2690] Kenalog injection and STD test

I had a potential exposure about 5 weeks ago.
Today I received a kenalog injection on my head and chest to treat some pimples on my skin. I took a 4th generation hiv test at 4 weeks. I'm planning on taking another test at the 6 weeks mark.
Will the kenalog injection affect my test result if taking the test 6 days after the injection?
Will it affect any other STD test such as RPR for syphilis or gonorrhea and chlamydia ?

Thank you!

Kenalog is a formulation of triamcinolone made for local administration such as injection into dermatological problems or sore joints.  The medication is used as a local injection to minimize systemic side effects while providing the benefit of the anti-inflammatory action of steroid medications.  The amount used for dermatologic injections is typically very small and a single kenalog treatment would not be expected to have a meaningful effect on STD test results of any sort, including 4th generation HIV or RPR tests or tests for syphilis and gonorrhea.

Have confidence in your test results.  EWH

Thank you Dr.

Can I see multiple injections on my body (4-5) as a single treatment?

Will my 6 weeks HIV 4th generation and or syphilis results still be conclusive?

Will kenalog injection affect HIV RNA test result?

Injections for multiple pimples is still quite a low dose and would not be expected to affect your test results.  Test results will still be conclusive.

Kenalog injections would have no effect whatsoever on HIV RNA test results.  EWH

Thank you doctor,
I took another test at the 6 week mark, after receiving the results I realized the panel of tests I ordered includes only the HIV-RNA test without the 4th generation HIV 1/2 test. I did take the 4th generation test at the 30 day mark.
Can I see the HIV-RNA at 6 weeks  together with the 4 generation at the 30 day conclusive or should I test again with the 4th generation?

Thank you again!

Yes. the combination of a negative HIV RNA test and a negative 4th generation combination HIV antigen/antibody test is conclusive at 30 days.  Have confidence in your results.

This is my third reply to your questions.  As per Forum Guidelines, the thread will be closed later today. Take care.  EWH
