[Question #2739] Protected single encounter. What's my risk of herpes / HPV?

Hello,

I had sex with a sex worker in China and was protected with a condom for both oral and vaginal sex, although she did lick my scrotum. The lighting was dim, so I couldn't visually inspect her. I'm unshaven, so hopefully that reduces the odds even further. One data point that causes me concern is that her saliva and potentially other bodily fluids could have contacted the base of my penis.

I've been doing some research and the numbers for herpes and HPV seem to be all over the place, with some sources saying that there is a high level of risk for transmission and others saying that the possibility is very low. The published work for HPV female to male transmission is particularly limited. Which is it? Should I be worried? If there's a particularly high risk, I'll refrain from future sexual activity until 3 months from now, when the blood tests for HSV can be considered more or less as accurate as they're going to get.

Thank you.

I think your risk for HSV is very very low given the situation that you describe.  HPV is harder to determine, but the condom is very useful.  Most people, by the time they have had five sexual partners in their lifetime, have had at least one strain of HPV infection.  How many lifetime partners do you think you've had?

Thanks, Terri. I've had two partners thus far, and I'm pretty sure neither has had any strain of HPV.

Would you say that I shouldn't worry and carry on, or are the low odds still high enough that I should get screened as soon as it makes sense?

There really isn't screening available for males for HPV at this time.  And no, I don't think you need screening for herpes.  I think you should carry on and if you have skin changes on your penis or genital area that are different for you, please have that checked out.  But honestly, this experience is really low risk for either.  How old are you?  Have you had the HPV vaccine yet?

Understood, thanks so much. Haven't had the vaccine - I'm 25, and apparently outside of the band for the HPV vaccine, unfortunately.

I would double check on that if I were you.  Even if you have to pay for it yourself, I think it would be worth it.  You are not too old biologically for the vaccine
