[Question #2902] Paid to apologize

Dr. HHH,

I actually paid the posting fee so I could apologize to you and Dr. Hook for some of the questions that I asked regarding HTLV and XMRV. I found a lab that tests for HTLV I/II antibodies via blood draw for a nice convenient fee of $150.00. The results came in today and it was non reactive for both types! I guess there is a reason you guys never recommended getting tested for it! Here are a couple post back from Medhelp that you guys replied to over 7 years ago regarding my situation (thought you might enjoy seeing how ya'll responded to me back than.) I also wanted to post this so people can learn from my experience. Tested negative for HIV, HTLV I/II, EBV, HSV, Ghon, Chlamydia, HEP ABC. Tests trump symptoms no matter what.

Thanks again Docs!

Dr Hook,

I do have a final question for you:

I know that the cause of CFS is a very debated topic but the consensus seems to be that it is viral in nature. Knowing that has it ever been proven to be sexually transmitted?

The chronic fatigue syndrome has been extensively researched.  many efforts have been made to link it to a viral infection but, despite all that one might see on the internet, none have been scientifically proven.  The are no credible suggestions the CFS is associated with sexual activity or an STI of any sort.  EWH

Dr Hook,

Have you ever come across someone who experienced similar symptoms after an unprotected sexual encounter? Ie testicles aching the next day which lead to a variety of symptoms a couple weeks later. Severe headaches in back of head, extreme muscle twitches/spasms  mainly in calves and hamstrings, rectal discharge (never received anything in my rectum). I tested negative for all STD’s but never received a diagnosis. Are these symptoms familiar to you and any one infection?  Every Dr I saw seemed stumped due to all tests coming back negative and blood work all normal. I know you can’t diagnose over internet but just curious if you’ve had experience with something similar?

I have seen several patients with these sorts of symptoms.  Exhaustive testing has never found an STI to be the cause of them however. Similarly, medications given to persons with negative tests has never been helpful.  In some a combination of anxiety and guilt has responded to work with trained counsellors.  The other source of information which may be helpful to you is to look into the Chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS) which is well described on Wikepedia.

As you know, this Forum permits up to three responses to each question.  This is my third response.  Thus this thread will be closed in a few hours.  Take care.  EWH
