[Question #2983] What are my risks of herpies hsv 2.

Hi doctors,

Last weekend I received a body to body massage from a csw. Well she actually just sat on my upper body and played with herself and then gave me a hand job.  I did not think anything of it until I noticed an abrasion on my stomach from my running belt 12 hours earlier.  My concern is that this very small abrasion has acted as a gateway for the hsv 2 virus.  I am not possitive she sat on the abrasion or whether she has the virus but it is still concerning me. What do you think is my risk of contracting herpies after this event? Would the small abrasion concern you.

There was no rubbing or sliding, just sitting.

There are a lot things that would have to come together to make this a risk - first, she would need to be infected with HSV 2.  About 25% of women are infected with HSV 2 and 75% are not.  Then, she would need to be shedding virus - people with HSV 2 shed virus on about 14% of days measured, so 86% of days no shedding is occurring.  Then she would have to be shedding virus from the exact location that was in contact with your tummy - lots of shedding is internal and would not come in contact with you at all.  Then, the abrasion would have to be substantial enough a break to allow virus in.  And then there has to be a certain amount of virus to infect another person - it's a lot more than you might think.  Given all of these factors, I think the risk of you acquiring herpes in this way is small enough to be unrealistic.  I believe you can put this matter to rest.  If you did acquire herpes in this way, the area of the abrasion is where you would notice water filled blisters, not the genital area the first time.  If you've had no blisters within 10 days of the contact, you can put this worry behind you.

Thank you.  I note your comments regarding the 10 days.  I thought most people do not experience symptoms.  In reality how many people experience symptoms?

I had also taken valacycloir 24 hours earlier to prevent hsv1 as I was run down and had just flown which usually triggers it. Will this make a difference. My abrasion has healed now and no symptoms.

I take on board your comments and they are greatly appreciated.  Just for closure, would you recommend testing or shall I put this behind me.

Again thank you.

It isn't that people don't HAVE symptoms. though perhaps 20% of those infected really don't, it's that they miss them because they are minor or they confused them as being from something else entire - poison ivy, friction burns, yeast infections, etc.
For how long did you take valacyclovir?

I only take it when I feel a break out coming on or I fly. I have taken it 3 times over the last 4-6 weeks. I took 4 tablets in the morning and 4 another 8 hours later as directed the day before.

Sorry to be clear I took 8 tablets the day before the exposure.  I don't take them each day, only when I feel a tickle or when I fly.

Sorry I am mistaken. It was 4 days before I took them.

That should have no influence on your situation at all.  With no symptoms, I feel quite confident in saying this experience did not result in you acquiring herpes.
