[Question #2990] Herpes Concern!!

About a month ago, I had protected intercourse with a woman that has hsv-2, but no condom was used when she gave me oral. She advised me that she hadn’t had a outbreak in 8yrs, and had previously been in a 4yr relationship where they had unprotected sex regularly. Her partner was not infected. I went for a routine check up about 2-3 weeks after having sex with her, and tested positive for hsv-1 & hsv-2. The specialist that contacted me told me that she could tell from the results that I had the hsv-1 for awhile, but had recently been infected with the hsv-2. The lady I had sex with stated that she didn’t have a oral herpes virus. I’ve had no outbreaks, but Now I worry myself that any itch in my pants is because of this virus. Is it possible that I could have been infected while using a condom? Could I have been infected from the oral sex? Is it possible that I had a false positive result, and should seek a second opinion?

Wait, let's step back a bit here. You need to obtain an actual copy of your test results. I wonder if they did an IgG or IgM test or both? The IgM is very often inaccurate so let's not jump to any conclusions quite yet. You don't get HSV 2 from oral sex. You could have acquired HSV 2 even with protected sex but it's not likely. Can you please get a copy of the results and post them for me here? Thanks

It shows in the ordered items HSV 1 and 2-Specific Ab, IgG; HSV 1 and 2 IgM Abs
The results show:
HSV 1 IgG, Type Spec 40.30 High
HSV 2 IgG, Type Spec 8.01 High
HSV 1 and 2 IgM Abs, Indirect
HSV 1 IgM Antibodies <1:10. titer <1:10
HSV2 IgM Antibodies <1:10. titer. <1:10
At the bottom it states:
Hsv1&2 share many cross reacting antigens. Elevated titers to both may represent crossreactive HSV Antibodies rather than exposure to both. Results for this test are for research purposes only

Both IgG values (which are the only ones that matter) are strongly positive. If you've had no symptoms, it could be for one of two reasons: 1) your HSV 1 infection produced a strong immune response that made your type 2 acquisition without symptoms 2) you could be missing symptoms are confusing them with something else 3) a low chance that this could be a false positive - I actually had one almost this high NOT confirm as positive by the gold standard herpes western blot . I would say there is a 95% chance it would confirm by the second test. This isn't necessarily new infection from this partner, you know. This could be long standing infection - have you had a herpes antibody test previous to this one recently?

This is the first hsv test in years. Most testing centers i’ve been to don’t test for hsv. I actually had to go to 2 different healthcare centers to get all of my lab work done. It’s possible that I had hsv-2 already prior to my last partner? Are you stating that I have a 95% chance of testing positive with a second test? The paper states that, results should not be used as a diagnostic procedure without confirmation of the diagnosis by another medically established diagnostic product or procedure. Should I go with the Western Blot? Also, the specialist wouldn’t prescribe me any medication because of me showing no symptoms. Do I have to wait for a actual outbreak for them to know what to put me on?

It is absolutely possible you've been infected for a much longer time, for sure.I'm saying if you had the confirmatory western blot antibody test.
I don't necessarily agree with what is written on the test, but there are so false positives on the test, as I mentioned. The western bot should be the final word on infection.
We know now that it isn't about outbreaks, it is about viral shedding. However, if you are having sex with someone who also has HSV 2, transmission is not a worry
