[Question #3039] Follow up (question 2924)

In my previous posts, I was showing my concern for persistent ngu. I took moxifloxacin 400mg once a day for 12 days, and was sure that would get rid of my problems. All my symptoms went away and I thought I was in the clear.

Until today, my penis seems to be swollen, and it is very difficult to urinate, and I have the feeling to urinate often. I noticed yesterday a dull sensitive feeling in my penis, kind of hard to describe. This has been going on for too long and the urologist I have been seeing hasn’t seemed to be much help. Shouldn’t have the avelox whipped out my ngu? Or does this sound like something different? This has been causing me a lot of stress and anxiety and I can’t stop thinking about it or get myself to relax.

I'm sorry that his problem continues to trouble you.  Obviously, the advice I can provide is limited as I do not have the opportunity to examine you to take a complete history. That is the job of your doctor.   In addressing complicated, recurring problems such as yours patience and working with a health care provider who you trust is essential. I think you need to work with a doctor who will tell you if abnormalities are present, if so what they are and what may be causing them,  At this juncture it is highly unlikely that this problem is a typical STI,.   If you are not getting the service you believe you should, you should see another doctor although in doing so, it will be likely that they will start your evaluation at the beginning again.  If however, you feel you are able to work with your doctor, the preferred approach would be to see him/her again and seek re-examination.

Also, as I mentioned before, "hyper-awareness" and repeated self-examination will lead to perceiving normal findings as abnormal.  EWH

Thank you. Maybe the swelling I’m experiencing is from over checking and being too rough doing so. My anxiety is over this is probably worse than the symptoms. My doctor said he thought whatever infection I had went away, but the inflammation was still there. Does that happen often? Also, would it be likely I have something wrong with my prostate even though I’m only 21? I use condoms regularly now but one of my main fears is that i could pass an infection to somebody.

Repeated self examination can absolutely cause and worsen swelling and irritation.  This is not something you should need to work to evaluate.

Prostate disease in a 21 year old is typically not a consideration.  Further, prostatitis is not typically caused by STIs.  Your reference to the possibility of a prostate problem suggests to me that you have been seeking information on the internet, another bad idea as statements there are often taken out of context, misleading or just plain wring.

You need to stop worrying, keep your hands off of your genital, stay of the internet and relax.  I would again, suggest that you verify the things I have said through interaction with a trained health care provider.  EWH
