[Question #3061] Question on Possible HSV Outbreak on Buttocks

Brief background: male, 30s, with a 5-6 year history of oral HSV-1 and the periodic cold sore outbreak. Approximately five weeks ago, I received unprotected oral sex from a new partner as well as genital-to-genital contact with our clothes (pants, underwear) still on. Partner says she has no history of herpes, although I was slightly concerned by two raised bumps on her inner thigh I attributed to razor burn or friction irritation.

One week later, I developed a sizable boil/pustule on my buttock. It resolved, but over this past weekend, I notice I've developed 5-6 small bumps, some with very tiny raised white heads, on both sides of my rear end, as well as one on the crease between my leg and crotch. This has me very nervous I somehow contracted herpes from my partner during either rubbing our bodies together or oral sex.

I irritated one bump with my fingernail and it bled--no clear fluid.  I also have a very long history of developing staph folliculitis on various parts of my body--just never on my backside. They do not hurt.

Is it possible to have a herpes outbreak consist of one large and painful bump, and then a less intense, more pervasive outbreak weeks later? If it were herpes, wouldn't I initially have lesions on my genitals and not solely on my backside? I plan to visit an STD clinic later this week when their hours are open, but was hoping to get some clarification here. Thank you.

So I see no way that you would have acquired HSV 2 genitally.  You had no genital to genital contact!
And you already have HSV 1 orally so it would be incredibly unlikely to acquire HSV 1 in a new location, since you already have it.
How were you thinking that you could have acquired herpes genitally?  Through the oral sex?

Hi, Terri,

Yes, either via oral sex, or perhaps via clothing that was too flimsy (underwear for her, pajama pants and underwear for me) and allowed for passage of the virus.  I also inserted my finger vaginally and then touched my own privates, but I don't know if that's a viable method of contracting it or not.

Clothing cannot be too thin for virus to get through.  that just doesn't and cannot happen.  Touching someone's genitals and then touching your own does not cause infection. There cannot be enough virus in that to become infected.  I think most people don't have information that you need a certain quantity of virus, as an adult, to get infected.  But you do.  Your concerns are unfounded.
