[Question #3064] Herpes transmission

Hello-  I recently dated a woman who told me she had Genital Herpes.  She said she hadn't had an outbreak in 6 or 7 years.  I dated her for 9 months.  We did not have vaginal intercourse during the 9 months, and I did not perform oral sex on her.  She performed oral sex on me a handful of times but never said she had oral herpes...just Genital.  I fingered her a handful of times but never noticed any sores and believe that she would not have let me do that if she was having an outbreak.  I know I washed my hands after I fingered her on a couple of those occasions but can't remember if I did it every time.  A month or so ago I got what looked like a rash, something like a dermatitis on the inner part of my thigh and then I had 3 little spots on the shaft of my penis....one on the left and 2 on right.  The spots never formed blisters or sores, they were not painful, they just itched.  The spot in my thigh was the size of a nickel and was red.  The spots on my shaft were smaller and not red.  They lasted about a week and then went away.  Very similar to other skin rashes/poison ivy I have had in past.  But no fluid filled blisters or sores.  Just a raised somewhat rough area that itches.  Could I have contracted hsv-1 ( I get cold sores) from her giving me oral, or could I have gotten hsv-2 from fingering her and then touching myself or her touching herself and then giving me a handjob with lotion?  Thank you in advance

The behaviors that you describe do not put you at risk for genital herpes, period.  The red spots don't sound at all like herpes to me but if they are, they are not from you contact with this person.  I don't know if you've ever been tested for herpes before?  Again, there was no risk to you from this encounter for any sexually transmission infection.

Thank you Terri-
So just to be clear....I get cold sores but haven't had one in forever.  Not sure if she does but she never had one while she dated me.  No chance of getting hsv-1 on my genitals from  oral sex if she was asymptomatic shedding if she did have it?  Especially if I already have antibodies?  And no chance of contracting hsv-2 or 1 depending on which type she has in her Genital region by either my hand touching me after fingering her or her hand touching me after she touches herself if she was asymptomatically shedding?  I have never been personally tested.  Glad to hear the areas do not sound like herpes.  Didnt think it was but  was worried about what atypical or mild symptoms may look like.

Once you have HSV 1 in one location, it is extremely unlikely you would acquire it in a new location.  And we really don't see herpes being transmitted via hands between people.  I am assuming you not seen anything on your hands like substantial blistering with oozing?  I think you would have said that.

Thank you for your reply.  It was very helpful.  With the hand comment I meant if she touched her Genital region and then touched my penis or if I fingered her and then touched my penis.  If she was shedding at any point could she get the virus on her hand and then transfer to me. Thanks so much

No.  We just don't see people acquiring HSV in this way - by touching genitals or masturbating genitals and then touching our own.
