[Question #3069] Husband and wife with ( genital) HSV2 oral sex.

Me and my wife both have ( genital ) HSV2. We would like to start performing unprotected oral sex or each other. I’ve read it was a low risk, but that’s not clear enough for me. What are the risk factors in spreading it to your mouth?

The risks are INCREDIBLY low - and here's why. First,it is highly unusual, once you have a well established infection, to get that same virus in a new location on your body. Second,HSV 2 does not like the mouth area at all and rarely shows up there or recurs there or sheds from there. Have you ever had a cold sore? If yes, this will look just like that should you get it orally, which I don't believe you will. So you can see that this combination of facts suggest that you should enjoy oral sex with each other without any real concern about HSV 2.

No, we’ve never had a cold sore. We have had HSV2 for 15 year. I may or may not get an outbreak once a year, but my wife gets more frequent outbreaks right before, or after her cycle, but not every time.

My previous message stands then. I would strongly suggest that you not worry about this and practice whatever sort of sexual contacts you would like to have without worry. The odds of you getting this in a new place is so small!
