[Question #3117] Follow up to 2888

Hi Terri. My initials are E.G. and you helped me to get a WB at 15 weeks that was completely negative after also having negative IgG testing at 14 weeks. You also patiently answered some follow up questions. I know that at this point I am almost certainly (or at least as certain as anyone cane be) not HSV infected. But once every 4 weeks or so I'm still seeing small red spots on the shaft of my penis. In almost all cases, they disappear in less than 24-48 hours. Never any blisters or ulcers. Never any symptoms around the time if the skin findings but lots of testicular pain and urinary urgency that I bet is anxitey. Last month, I went for a swab but they sent the wrong culture media. This past week, they allowed me to swab at home but sent for culture and not PCR. It was negative.
My question is given the negative Western blot what should prompt to go for a final swab for PCR? Should I only go if what I see are clearly blisters or ulcers? I realize it's almost certain that every guy gets benign red spots like these from time to time and that I'm being overly concerned and obsessive. But I'm trying to balance that against making sure I've done everything to provide accurate information and protection for any future partners.

Yes, I would suggest only going to be swabbed if you have more classic symptoms but certainly I have seen things swab tested that were not classic and were positive so it is difficult to give you absolute answers here. You are correct - most people get small red spots in the genitals from time to time that are nothing to worry about. Having said all of that, herpes lesions would almost never heal in a single day.
