[Question #3118] Hiv test

Hi,
I had protected vaginal sex with a women who I have known for years but have not seen in awhile I know she has dated some odd characters in the last and has recently lost a lot of weight. I am worried about condom failure with the room being extremely dark. I got an hiv antigen and antibody 4 generation test 36 days from exposure it was negative . Would this be considered conclusive and is there any reason for further testing ?

Welcome back to our Forum. The likelihood that your recent partner had HIV is statistically low ( a fraction of 1% unless she uses IV drugs) and even if your condom broke (which is also unlikely since when condoms break they break wide open, leaving no doubt that they have failed), unprotected sex with an HIV-infected woman leads to infection only once in every 1000-2000 exposures. Combination HIV antigen/antibody tests provide definitive results 6 weeks after exposure and detect over 99% of recent infections when used more than 4 weeks after exposure. Thus, while your test results are not quite definitive by CDC criteria, at this time your risk of having been infected from the exposure you describe is less than 1 in 10 million - not something to worry about. If I were you, I would believe my test results an see no need for additional testing.
I hope this information is helpful and will allow you to have happy, worry free holidays. EWH
