[Question #3146] Do I have Herpes?

Thank you so much for your help.

1.  I am a middle aged man and had 3 protected sexual encounters in the UAE with 3 different escorts (not high class) around November 23-26.

2. A week later I developed a burning sensation  when urinating. A few days later  I developed a bump on the shaft of my penis.  I also had some testicular pain.

3. I went to a urologist who said I had a mild UTI and prescribed a course of antibiotics including Levofloxin for a week.

4.  I also went to a dermatologist who diagnosed the bump as a mollescum. After giving me a cream to put on it he removed it a week later (curretage).

5.  While the UTI settled down I developed a red rash  where my thigh meets my groin,  a fungal infection on the tip of my penis, a tingling  sensation in my body at different places but more on the left side, a mildly swollen node under my ear, flat warts on my left hand and sinusitis in my left sinus cavity above my left eye. I discovered the sinusitis when I went to the dentist and he took an xray as I thought the pain in my gum (apparently caused by the sinusitis) was a dental issue.

6. My dermatologist has given me various creams for the fungal infection and the other skin issues. He has examined me and did not say any of them were STDS (I didnt tell him about the sexual encounters though).

7 My sinusitis has improved with steam inhalation and the skin problems appear to be on the mend, but I keep getting some minor bumps ( dont look like herpes vesicles) on my left thigh. which look more like tiny warts or hair pulls.

8.  Lastly I feel that  I reacted badly to Levofloxin as I got a rash and skin peeling on my face a while ago and the tingling started after taking it.  I also used to feel warm in the  face in the evening but with no fever. These symptoms are gone now.

My question is that is there a chance I have contracted HSV-1 or 2 given the above symptoms. I haven’t had a fever or  cold or any typical symptoms.  I am quite worried.

Thank you

Thankfully, absolutely nothing you have described here gives me any concerns about you acquiring genital herpes at these encounters.  Nothing.
If you were going to demonstrate symptoms of herpes, it would have happened within the first several days after the encounter.
It is so unlikely that the physician would mix up molluscum and herpes.  Molluscum definitely has a hard white core that can be and sounds like it was removed from the bump.  Herpes presents like water blisters - very different.

Dear Terri:

Thank you very much for your reply. I am much relieved.

I had only one follow up question. The fungal infection on my penis is gone as per my dermatologist. However the meatus is still a bit swollen and red and I still feel a bit of discomfort and burning. I know this isn’t an STD related query but just wanted to know whether it does take a bit of time for things to return to normal.

Thank you again and Happy New Year to you and all at Asha. You do wonderful work!

Sorry one more question. Is there any risk of HSV 1?

You don't describe receiving unprotected oral sex - did you?  That might present some risk for HSV 1 acquisition if you did.

I had one episode of unprotected oral about 8 months ago but not during these encounters. There were no Herpes sores after the one 8 months ago

If you had no sores after the encounter 8 months ago, then HSV 1 genital infection is unlikely.  If you have ever in your life had a cold sore, then you already have HSV 1 infection and are unlikely to get it in a new location.
