[Question #3155] HSV/cold sores

Hi there,

This is potentially a silly question, so apologies.

I recently shared food with a friend with obvious cold sores. We didn't share utensils, but ate from the same plates and dipped the utensils/food in the same sauce.

Is it possible the virus has been transmitted to me in this way?

Thank you in advance for your reply.

Thanks for your question, and there are absolutely no silly questions here!
This is not a method of transmission for herpes, you have no need to be concerned about this encounter over a meal.

Thanks Terri.

I'm going to take the opportunity to ask another question that's been on my mind, if that's okay.

I've never had a cold sore, but I've suffered from recurrent mouth ulcers for as long as I can remember.
The locations vary quite a bit -- from the inside of my lip, to the side of my tongue, etc.

Could this be a sign of hsv infection?

Thanks again.

Normally those would be canker sores, not herpes.  Most people get theses at one time or another and are sometimes related to food reactions.  Have you noticed any relationship between what you are eating and when these show up?

Thanks Terri.

I haven't noticed anything, no, but I'll keep that in mind.

Okay, that sounds like a good plan.
