[Question #3201] HSV 2 Transmission Risk / Disclosure to Partner

I'm ashamed to say that I did not inform a new partner of my HSV 2 positive status. I intend to now and would like to mention the probability of transmission having occurred in our circumstance.

I contracted the condition 5 years ago and have had no outbreaks in recent years. The initial outbreak itself was minor.

I and my new partner had sex 5 times using a condom, which completely covered the previously affected area. There was a period of about 2 to 3 minutes when sex arose without using a condom; it was not rough, relatively limited movement or friction and no sense of abrasion. In the subsequent months my partner reported no symptoms. In this context, is it reasonable to say that the probability of infection arising is extremely low and approaching 0%? I read that transmission is not simply via skin to skin contact, but also necessitates some tearing to occur in the membrane.

Oral sex also arose once, for about 5 minutes. Is there any data on genital to oral transmission probability?

Thank you for considering my queries and providing this very useful service.

I think, given the regular use of the condom and the limited number of contacts with her not reporting any symptoms, the chances of her being infected are very very low.  It is an error to think you need tearing to transmit virus - that's just not so at all.
We have no data on genital to oral transmission but HSV 2 traditionally does not like the genital area.
I would recommend that you disclose this as soon as possible and ask that she be tested as well and offer to pay for it.  And be prepared for her to be upset with you.  But do tell her that condoms reduce transmission from infected males to uninfected females by  96%.
