[Question #3253] Oral Herpies

I get cold sores often.  When I have one can I give it to my partner if he already gets cold sores also?   Will I give him an outbreak by him coming into contact with mine?

It is extremely unlikely that either of you would pass this virus to each other in a new place on your bodies since you each already have it.  You will not trigger an outbreak in him if you have a cold sore and come in contact with him, nope

Thanks much.  I reaseached the internet and I was freaked out.  I get them often because of stress.  I take an anti viral that nips them quickly as long as I start it at very first sign.  Question: if we both have it oraly then  i probably don’t have to worry that I will pass it to him during oral sex if I’m shedding.  I never would do oral if I had an outbreak but I worried about shedding in between.

The odds of one of you acquiring this genitally since you both have it orally is just incredibly incredibly small. Yes you are likely shedding virus in between oral outbreaks but since he is already infected with HSV one, it is just an incredibly small risk that he would acquire it genitally as well or that you would acquire it genitally as well. If I were in your situation, I would not worry about this. Well, in fact, I am in the situation now that I think about it and I do not worry about this at all. My husband and I both get cold sores.
