[Question #3289] Worried

Hi,
I’ve had herpes like symptoms on and off for 15 years since being a teenager when I think I was infected and finally just got tested. The test came back negative for both hsv1 and hsv2 but I don’t trust the lab that did the test since it wasn’t on a list of 90%- 99% of accurate test done by labs in the book called living and loving with HSV should I get a second opionion and another blood test?

I'm interested in what testing you had done - was it IgG?  The IgG test misses 30% of HSV 1 infections and 8% of HSV 2 infections compared to the gold standard herpes western blot from the University of Washington.
Have you ever had the sores tested or are there actual sores present?  What are you symptoms like?

Thanks it was a test done by a primary care doctor and lab Corp was the lab performing the test. I’ve never had the sores tested they are bumps on back of the penis. I get cold sores on my lips every once in a while. Haven’t heard of gold standard western blot and the symptoms are real mild just itching but sometimes cold sores should I get tested again I don’t trust the doctor?

You know, the statistic of 98 and 99% just don't fit with the data we currently have about the sensitivity of the test.
You can Google herpes western blot.  it is the test that all research relies upon, for example, while enrolling someone in a clinical trial for herpes.  it is just considered the best test for herpes antibody and is done only at the University of Washington.  I can help you obtain that test if you decide you want it.  Or you can work with your doc on this which I would normally suggest but it doesn't seem that you trust him?
