[Question #3373] Burning thighs

Hello,  about 6 weeks ago I received unprotected oral sex from a girl, about 2 weeks later I had a burning sensation in my inner thighs and a slight ache in my penis,  I went and got checked for stds which came back clear but I wasn’t tested for herpes. I was otherwise well with no fevers, no rash’s or lesions and my glands appear normal, urination is also normal. This episode self resolved after a week. Now six weeks after the initial symptoms it has returned, it is the same with the burning sensation in the inner thighs and perhaps a very minor ache in my penis but otherwise no symptoms. Any ideas?

Many people describe burning of the thighs or legs or buttocks and are concerned that this could be genital herpes. But I want people to remember that herpes is characterized by the presence of sores and without sores, herpes is really much less likely. Have you ever in your life had a cold sore on your left or in your nose? If the answer is yes, then you will acquiring genital herpes through receiving oral sex would be very unlikely because you already have HSV one which is the virus that you would have received from a partner giving you oral sex. The only way you are going to know for certain if you have acquired herpes at this encounter would be to obtain an antibody test but if positive for HSV one, it would not tell you if your infection was genital or oral. So I'm thinking that an antibody test would not be very useful in this situation.

Thanks for the reply Terri, I still having itching in the thighs and groin but haven’t had any sores or lesions, this episode of burning/itchy has been going for about 2 weeks now, I’ve been using anti fungal cream which may have made it slightly better,  would I be safe to assume that after having symptoms for a few weeks with no lesions that I can rule hsv2 out?

I think that if you were going to have lesions for HSV 2, yes,  you would have them by now.
