[Question #3397] Follow up to Question #3390

Doctor,
Again, I'm looking to move on. I don't know what is more indicative of ARS vs an ill timed sore throat/virus. I've never had an enlarged salivary gland before either, so it threw me off.
Thanks again.

Welcome back, but sorry you found it necessary. I've given you my professional advice and opinion, and this doesn't change anything. It's cold/flu season, and almost certainly this is a garden variety respiratory infection; and to my knowledge acute HIV does not affect the salivary glands. If in the next few days you were to develop more typical symptoms of acute retroviral syndrome (ARS), such as fever, several enlarged lymph nodes, and/or a widespread non-itchy skin rash, I would be more worried. But even then I would be skeptical about ARS or any connection to the low risk sexual event you described.

Thanks Doctor. I forgot to mention that the practioner prescribed me 40 mg prednisone for 5 days to allow drainage from my ear canals. I have not seen any fever, rash or swollen lymph nodes, muscle aches, night sweats or joint pain. Any reason to think prednisone would hide all the potential symptoms? I am incline to trust your original opinion, but want to make sure I'm not getting too excited and relieved.

And yes, I jus realized how ridiculous I sounded asking that after reading it...

Prednisone might slightly ameliorate ARS symptoms, but probably would have little effect. In any case, symptoms are always unreliable indicators for or against a new HIV infection. That your exposure carried no plausible risk is the important thing. You might consider re-reading my main reply to your previous question. It was meant to be very reassuring!---

I really didn't want to waste my final question on this, I was hoping to be able to update this after the end of the week at least. I have found this communication to be helpful. I know the rule on repetitive posts, but I would appreciate if I could update if something changes, or if I could buy a last post.
I am unsure what is steering the ship at this point, whether it is just anxiety or something more. I am just trying to wrap my head around all of this which was made more difficult by this situation.
Again, if possible would I be able to post post an update or buy a new message with how things go over the next week if more questions arise?

A few comments before closing this thread. First, you were not at risk for HIV: believe it. Second, HIV never, ever causes only a single symptom and would never cause whatever sort of bump you have in association with your salivary gland or its duct. And of course anxiety can cause "phantom sensations"; the lymph node inflammation with HIV is not painful. Acid reflux isn't a cause of any of this, but is another symptom typical for anxiety magnifying symptoms or even normal body sensations.

As for "coincidence", that's all it is. Anyway, your mind may be focusing on the non-exposure sexual event you are worried about, but if you think about it, in the last few weeks you've also had all sorts of nonsexual contacts with other people, eaten various foods, breathed the air (maybe with industrial contamination), and were exposed to all the normal environmental risks of normal life. If there were a particular cause for your symptoms, all these obviously would be just as likely as the sexual one.
Sorry, but we don't permit extended discussions, which tend to prolong and not help resolve users' anxieties, so this thread will now be closed. Please note that repeated questions on the same topic or exposure are not permitted. Future new questions along these lines will not be answered, or will merely refer you back to previous threads. This policy is based on compassion, not criticism, and is designed to reduce temptations to keep paying for questions with obvious answers. In addition, experience shows that continued answers tend to prolong users' anxieties rather than reducing them. Finally, such questions have little educational value for other users, one of the forum's main purposes. The forum is not a valid substitute for proper medical care. Thank you for your understanding.
But I do hope these discussions help you move along. Best wishes and stay safe.
