[Question #3574] Recently diagnosed with hsv 2

On the 18th of March I felt burning and itching and thought it was my period. On the 26th I went to pp and they gave me an hsv test meanwhile my symptoms got worse but they prescribed me ac and I started taking it the next day on the 27. April 4th they confirmed I was positive and now I’m just trying to cope. I had a follow up appt on the 9th because I had lots of ? I was examined and the dr was puzzled because I m still red and irritated but everything looked much better. He said I should follow up in a month to ensure I don’t have anything else? They did not advise a blood test because it’s too soon and could only confuse me more. I was very emotional during that visit. My question is from the 1st date I felt symptoms to now is about 25 days. Can a first outbreak last that long? Should I be worried I have something else? I also went to my primary care dr and they test for a yeast and bv which came back negative. The pa that swabbed me was not very thorough meaning she apologized for making a mess. I’m experiencing extreme anxiety and depression as a result of all of this. I’m thankful for this resource but it’s a shame there aren’t more ways to just talk to someone that isn’t in a medical field and throws statistics at you. I have a bf and told him right away. He got tested and we’re awaiting the results. From what I’ve read he will most likely come back negative?? This was cause more confusion and possibly end our relationship. I’m suffering both physically and emotionally and just need your help. Thank you

I realize this my be my 2nd question now? Sorry my head is not thinking straight

I need some clarification.  How exactly were you diagnosed with herpes - was it a swab test from sores?  And do you have HSV 1 or HSV 2?
It is unusual for a herpes outbreak to last 25 days for sure - have you actually tried any over the counter yeast medicine?
Please answer my questions so I can help you best

I was diagnosed with a swab dna at pp and was told
That is the most accurate and the visual the dr saw had him confused at first visit , but then second visit he said I definitely had lesions then  and because he swabbed then he was sure the test positive was accurate.  My first visit with him , I was very upset and maybe that is why he presented it that way? I’m so worried I have warts now because what else? Although I don’t see any signs of them. I do know my bf had been given the HPV vaccination. No I have not taken any over the counter medicine for a yeast infection. On my 2nd visit the dr  at pp, he re examined me because he was bewildered I still had symptoms but he didn’t offer any tests for yeast or anything.  I didn’t pursue because my primary care dr had tested me and it was negative for the yeast and bv . I was diagnosed with HSV 2 and I should mention that my bf has tested positive for H SV 1 in the past year. That is the other confusion, this is apparently my first outbreak but I have been with my partner for a year. I should also disclose that when he and I first got together I had 2 tests for cylamdia one positive and one negative. The 2nd diagnosis was with pp and they prescribed me medicine that seemed to work but I also had a bad yeast infection that took 2 oral treatments to work.

OK, so has your boyfriend also had an IgG test for HSV 2, do you know?  And if so, when?
Are you taking antiviral medicine?
There is no reason to believe that you have HPV now, from what you have said, particularly if he has been vaccinated for HPV.  Have you been vaccinated for HPV as well?  I suspect, but have no way of knowing for sure, that all the prolonged irritation could still be caused yeast and I think it might be worth just trying the over the counter treatment.  Also, can I assume that your partner was also treated for the chlamydia?

Hi Terri

Yes he was tested in 2015, June of 2017 after my diagnosis of chlymadia which was negative for him and the woman he previously had sex with  3 weeks prior ( or so she says)  and he was treated for chlymadia then before he took the test but only 5 days prior. Hes  always comeback hsv1 positive. He recently took a blood test I’m assuming was the igg and igm because those are the test he took previously which he shared his results. We are still awaiting his latest results which from all of my own research will come back negative because either there aren’t enough antibodies or because of his hsv 1,  he’s built up an immune system. I am taking ac 400 mg twice per day. I have not been vaccinated for hpv from what I have read it’s usually administered for young people. I am in my late 40s. Should I get the vaccine? And should I get the shingles vaccine? I just don’t understand how this is happening a year later in our relationship? I might add we have both been faithful. I feel like the finger will get pointed entirely at me? Have I been carrying this around and just now had my first outbreak? Can the swan test be wrong?  His dr told him that if this is negative, that he’s 99% sure he’s not a carrier. Also the pp dr said there’s no use getting a blood test for me because it was a swab. Thank you

You could have had this a long time, yes, and didn't know it.  A swab test that is collected from a lesion and it both positive AND typed is not wrong.  I agree that it is not necessary now for you to get a blood test.  The test picks up 92% of HSV 2, not 99%.  If he is infected, there is a 92% chance it will show up.  The test looks for antibody so your idea about that is incorrect.  Yes, the HPV vaccine is administered to people normally under the age of 26 but we have certainly used it in older people who have had very few (less than 5) sex partners.

His test was negative. I’ve getting conflicting information from my gyne now. She says that his hsv 1 most likely have me the hsv 2? And there is no need for us to use protection because he has herpes and the 1 and 2 don’t really make a difference? I’m going to continue taking my ac and we will use a condom because I want to lesson the chances of him getting it transmitted.

HSV 1 cannot give you HSV 2.  If he is negative for HSV 2 and you are positive, then he is vulnerable to your HSV 2.  You are wise to continue your acyclovir and use condoms.
