[Question #3595] Genital Herpes Simplex Virus 1
88 months ago
|
Hi, in September 2017, I was diagnosed with genital Herpes Simplex Virus 1 via a vaginal culture. I have been taking a maintenance dose of Valtrex 500 mg once a day since that time and have not had a recurrence. My husband has also been diagnosed with HSV 1. However, he has never had any symptoms of the virus.
What are the chances of me having another outbreak?
How long do I need to continue on the Valtrex?
We have been practicing safe sex since my outbreak in September 2017.
Is it possible for me to receive oral sex from him and in turn give oral sex to him without fear of causing another outbreak and do we need to continue to use condoms for intercourse?

HSV 1 recurs about once every other year and I personally do not believe that you need to take Valtrex daily for HSV 1 since recurrences are infrequent and your husband also has HSV 1 so transmission is not an issue. You can do whatever you chose sexually as acquiring HSV 1 in a new location for either of you is very unlikely.
