[Question #3599] HPV infection duration and is there a need to disclose after 10 years

I'm a mid 50's male who was in a long term monogamous marriage.  10 years ago, my then wife made me aware that she had high risk HPV after her visit to her OGYN.  One year ago, we divorced and I'm now starting to date.  From what I have read, we most likely didn't continue to pass the virus back and forth.  So my question is:  Is there a need to disclose this with a new partner given the fact that so much time has passed? Or should I come forward with this info as I surely wouldn't want to risk passing the virus onto someone I care about if somehow I didn't clear it.

Welcome to our Forum  I'll try to help.  You are thoughtful to think about the possibility of disclosing of your prior exposure to a partner with HPV complications (your ex) but disclosure is not necessary.  In fact, at this time, on this Forum neither of us even suggest that disclosure of HPV to current partners is absolutely necessary.  The basis of this position is that virtually everyone who is sexually active and has not had the HPV vaccine is likely to already have or have had HPV.   In your case, after 10 years, it is unlikely that even if you were infected, that the infection is still present.  I would not worry.  EWH

Thanks for the information and that is comforting... I did want to mention that even though it has been 10 years since my ex wife was informed she had the high risk virus, it has only been about a year and a half since she and I last had sex.  So I just wanted to make sure I'm communicating properly and not insinuating that it has been 10 years since we slept together.  I would appreciate your extra clarity on this just so I can be sure.

Thanks for the additional information.  It does not change my assessment or advice however.  This really is not something for you to worry about as you explore new relationships.  EWH
