[Question #3609] Hiv test

Hello. I did an hiv  test at 4,6,7,8,9 weeks all negative except one Home test was faulty and I got re tested in clinic at 7 weeks with duo test and at 8. Now the walk in doc said I need to re test at 12 weeks can my result change? My risk was unprotected sex with a male once and I’m female. The anxiety is leading to sore throats this week and itchy skin

Welcome to our Forum..  Thank you for your confidence in our site.  I will be happy to comment.  Before I provide a direct comment, let me point out that even before testing, your risk for HIV exposure was very low.  Even in areas where HIV is common, most men do not have HIV and even if your partner had HIV and was not on treatment, your risk for HIV from the exposure was less than 0.1% (less than 1 in 1000).  With the testing that you have had, you can now be entirely confident that you did not get HIV from the events that you have described.

To expand on this, if your tests for HIV were antibody only tests, they provide definitive results by week 8 so your results at 8 and 9 weeks can be counted on.  In addition, DUO tests provide completely conclusive results by week six following exposure  as well so your 7 and 8 week Duo tests are also conclusive.  You can be entirely confident that your test results are not going to change and that no further testing is needed.  Your recent sore throats and itchy skin in no way change my assessment.

I hope this information is helpful to you.  Take care. EWH

Thank you Dr. Edward. I think all the different guidelines were confusing me and the walk in doctor saying that i have to re test now at 3 months again at 6 was terrifying to hear as he said I was still needing to test. I appreciate the reassurance as this has created a lot of anxiety as I was getting so much conflicting information. I will stop testing at this point. So my 12 week should come back negative

I am sorry to ask again as I think this has all created a serious amount of anxiety and led to many tests. Now having a sore throat, chest pain and itchy skin has made me more anxious and the walk in doc suggesting that a re test was needed at 12 weeks despite all my negative tests has made me quite nervous.

If you test at 12 weeks, I am confident it will be negative.  The doctor who recommended this is using older data which is no longer accurate.  Further, should you decide to test again, I would also point out that if your symptoms were due to HIV, any HIV test performed while or after symptoms were present would be conclusive for determining whether or not your symptoms are due to HIV as well.  No reason to worry.  EWH
