[Question #3617] HSV1 and Sinus, Throat Issues

Experts,

I am curious about HSV1 and if it could be causing some of the symptoms I am having. I did not know I was positive until recently where I tested IGG and came back positive (2 tests confirmed). Nonetheless, I have been under a fair amount of stress and had a breakout of lesions on the exterior (some interior) of my nose in November 2017. It had been 10+ years since this happened to me. The lesions went away in about 7-10 days.

Recently I ended up sick again with some type of viral pharyngitis and congestion (yellow at first) and have not been able to get over this cold (I am on day 15). I now have a clear mucus in my nose/throat which makes me cough and continue to have red spots on the back of my hard/soft palate/tonsils, as well as a continued sore throat (slight at times). The only image that I could find which looks similar to the red spots is a doctor's posted image of herpetic pharyngitis (I am not sure this is what I am dealing with frankly).

My question: Could HSV 1 cause these types of lesions, dark red spots, cold symptoms, congestion (clear) and cough symptoms? I am asking because of the throat issue primarily and have noticed that since November, I have had many sinus issues (off and on), which is not typical for me. I do not suffer from allergy issues, etc. I am going to a primary Doctor today to have this looked at - but really wanted to better understand how HSV1 could present itself within the nasal / throat area.

Thank you.

To me, the nose things sound like herpes and the congestion does not sound anything like herpes.
I'm glad you are going to see your primary care doc to see what might be going on here.

Yes, I am positive the nose was herpes. It was a classic herpes rash with small blisters. I used Abreva topical on the lesions to help them go away and I have not had another breakout since November.

Nonetheless, I went to my GP and he noted the inflammation in my throat and congestion, etc. He noticed that I had many swollen lymph nodes in my throat/neck area (these were the bumps in my throat). My GP believed it was post viral nasal drip that was causing the issue - that I had some type of viral infection (unknown) and now my body still was acting like it was there, but I am past the infection stage.  Also tested me for strep and sent my culture to a lab.

Have you seen examples where herpes can cause sinus issues in the nose region? Would this be a characteristic of the disease?

.. rapid strep test was negative, but he checked to be safe.

I have never seen herpes cause the upper respiratory track symptoms that you are experiencing currently.

Thank you. This is what I wanted to know. With the breakout, I wanted to check on the possibility of the throat inflammation and post nasal drip being correlated. The timing may just be a coincidence.

Glad to hear you are reassured that the URI symptoms are not herpes related.
