[Question #3695] Prevention of HSV1

As someone who constantly used to get cold sores, I know what a pain they are. I've been very careful with my children not to kiss them when I have one. My daughter will head to college this fall and I'm aware of college student behavior - sharing drinks and other things, intoxication etc. What can I tell her to prevent her from being exposed to HSV1? Thanks for any advice,

I don't have concerns about sharing drinks - the risk for her is likely receiving oral sex if she is antibody negative.  We are seeing an interesting social thing going on now - parents have realized that cold sores are a form of herpes virus so they are extremely careful about not kissing their kids when they have a cold sore but then the become sexually mature and oral sex has become far more common.  So instead of going into their sex lives with HSV 1 antibody from cold sores as children, they come in with no antibody and 70% of new herpes in college students is HSV 1!  I would advise her of this fact and discuss the risks of oral sex with her.
You should also talk about the benefits of condom use for sure.

One follow-up. Is there prophylactic treatment for cold sores with Valacyclovir?

Yes,you can take valacyclovir to prevent cold sores, you can take it daily or you can take it as cold sore begin to try to stop them from "blooming" into full cold sores.

Hey Terri - last follow-up - when you say "I don't have concerns about sharing drinks" does that mean that you cannot transmit HSV1 through the sharing of a cup/glass? Thanks.

I am not aware of any documented cases of someone transmitting herpes via a cup or glass. The virus needs to be warm and living on the person. This is not the case with an in animate object. Is it possible? I guess anything is possible but the chances of this happening are extremely unlikely in the worst case scenario
