[Question #3732] HSV and antiviral medications

I am a 55 yr old female, diabetic w/ stage 3 kidney disease.  I was just diagnosed with HSV 2. I was prescribed Valtrex but had a terrible reaction to it. Also this medication causes kidney failure. Is there anything out there that I can take that won't cause such damage?

This medication does NOT cause kidney failure but for the person with kidney disease already, like you, the dose has to be reduced according to a specific schedule, according to your kidney test values.  All the antivirals need to be adjusted for those with kidney impairment

Thank you, Terri, for clarifying this for me.

you are most welcome.  I know that it can be difficult for people with kidney disease to treat genital herpes because of this issue.  If your physician is having questions about the actual dose adjustment schedule, it is listed in the PDR and is based on your particular lab values.  Perhaps you will do better with a far lower dose, at least to start.  I don't know what your reaction was but sometimes, that is helpful and especially for you.
