[Question #3772] hsv2 transmission, new partner

hello,
There is a conversation with a new possible sexual partner. he is well aware of my genital hsv2 infection. he would be my first sexual partner following my diagnosis and I am terrified of passing it to him. I was diagnosed back in March 2017. I had my first outbreak in February 2017, which is how I found out I had the infection. I had been negative before February 2017. I had 2 more out breaks following February. one in March and my last in April 2017.  during those outbreaks, the sores would be present on the two sides of my labia majora I have not had an obvious outbreak since.

my question is: what is the effectiveness of transmission only using condoms versus combined with acyclovir?

I am hesitant to take the medication because of the side effects and overall just don't want to take another pill. I figure if I know the risk only using condoms versus combined with the medication, I can share that info with my partner and he can decide if he still wants to proceed.

Thank you in advance for your response.

I would also like some information about oral sex with hsv2 genital infection. what is the risk of transmission to him if he gives me oral sex without protection?

I would ask you to reevaluate your position on taking antiviral medicine. In my experience, most people do not experience difficult side effects at all. I have had patients on antiviral medicine for 30 years continuously without any issues at all. The medicine is only activated when virus is present.  Condoms reduce transmission by about half an antiviral medicine reduces transmission by about half so using both, having sex about twice per week, the risk of transmission drops to one to 2% over the period of the year. We do not have the statistics on transmission of herpes type II to the mouth through oral sex but we do know that it is rare.

Please let me know what other questions you might have
