[Question #3795] Oral Cancer Risk & HPV Vaccination

I’ve seen an escort and engaged in cunnilingus with her.  Now I’ve learned about oral cancer and that this activity can expose you to HPV-16 and 18, the major risk factors for it.  However, she has been vaccinated with Gardasil before becoming sexually active and so I think I’m not at risk of HPV and this type of cancer.  Is that true or am I missing something.

Welcome back to the forum. Thanks for your question.

Everybody gets HPV, and the high risk types like HPV16 and 18 are among the most common strains of HPV. So you've probably been repeatedly exposed to them. But it really doesn't matter. In all sexually active people, the risk of pharyngeal (throat) cancer due to HPV is very low -- rising rates, but it's still a rare cancer compared with common cancers like lung, colon, prostate, etc. That you've had oral sex frequently is no different than anyone else. You are at little or no risk.

And the risk is even lower with this particular partner, since she was immunized. If it is true she was vaccinated before becoming sexual activity, she cannot possibly have HPV. So for sure no risk at all from this particular partner. However, based on your distant past questions (a couple of years ago), you likely have been exposed to various HPV infections before now. So you could be at low risk. But for the reasons above, really nothing to worry about.

I hope this information is helpful. Let me know if anything isn't clear.

Thank you very much Dr. Handsfield.  I think that answers the question.  It is as I thought.  And you can close this out.

Best Regards,
