[Question #3809] Postherpetic neuralgia?

HSV 2  diagnosed 2.5 years ago at age 50 from man who didn't disclose.  Swab was positive. Blood test was negative. Only had one initial very severe OB. Started Valtrex  daily.  Immediately started having anal/vag neuralgia that has not gone away  since. Tried TCA's, Gabapentin, Cymbalta, pelvic PT,  natural supplements/immune system boosters, diet changes, relaxation,  ice packs, sought advice from several MD,s, viral experts.  Always been healthy. Good immune system. Increased Valtrex to 1gm after 1.5 years and got worse so stopped Valtrex. Got a little better but still continuous pain, ranges 2/10 to 6/10. Pain shifts around genital area, varies from tingling, aching, throbbing, stinging, worse when sitting.  Better in am, worse at night.  Exhausted from it. What is this? Would a nerve block help? Pudendal neuralgia?  Should I see pain management or find a GYN who specializes?  Is this even related to HSV? Only taking vitamins and supplements now.  Thanks

You have certainly tried a number of things to improve your condition. Given everything that you have tried, and given that Valtrex makes it worse, I would be surprised if this has anything to do with herpes. I cannot think of one other thing that would make this better if it was due to herpes. I am assuming that you have had a work up with MRI to see if this is related to anything else? I'm sorry you're experiencing these problems– It sounds pretty miserable. The only thing I can think of is to see a pain specialist. I'm sorry I don't have any other good ideas for you.
