[Question #3827] Herpes testing

Since my last question, I got tested for hsv 1+2. The testing was done about almost a year after my suspected exposure. I did an IGG blood test. About 24 hours the lab called me and told me the tests came back negative but did not give me a value. I'm just curious as to how likely this was a false negative? I only ask because my urethra is still red and sometimes itches but my urologist says she doesn't know what it is!

I doubt that herpes would cause rather constant redness and itching.  Negative is good. The test misses about 8% of HSV 2 and 30% of HSV 1 compared to the gold standard herpes western blot. A positive test for HSV 1 would only indicate an infection, it would not tell you where it is so I'm not sure how helpful that would be with your very minimal symptoms.  And 92% sensitivity for HSV 2 is quite good.

Okay thanks for the input! Do you have any ball park guesses as to what may be the cause of the inside of the opening of my urethra to be read and itchy on and off for the past year? I tested negative for all STD's.

I suppose it is possible that you have a fungal infection in the urethra but other than that, I really don't know what might be causing you to feel itchy now and then in the urethra.  But I do think it's probably unrelated to a herpes infection
