[Question #3828] HSV-2 IgG test results of 0.31

My lab results from BioReference came back today with HSV-1 IgG at 0.02 but HSV-2 IgG at 0.31. Both had a reference range of <0.90 as negative, so both showed up as negative. However, is there is any significance to the HSV-2 being at 0.31 (vs. something much lower / closer to zero?). Could it be that the titer is building and become >0.91 in a few days / weeks (e.g. if I'm in the window period)? Or is this test result definitively negative?

There is absolutely no significance to the fact that the HSV 2 was slightly higher than the HSV 1 index value. Both are soundly negative. I can't tell you how likely it is that you might be building antibody because I have no reference in terms of timing of any worrisome sexual encounter. When was that?

Thanks, Terri. The encounter was about 7-8 weeks before the blood draw for the test. The question I have is specifically : whether the 0.31 HSV-2 IgG test itself indicates any buildup of antibodies (as opposed to a read of zero or 0.0x). I realize that the window period for a definitive IgG test is somewhat longer than the 7-8 weeks, and that I can't know for sure unless I retest another 4 - 8 weeks later, so I'm worried that it may be building the antibody levels and in a few more weeks could be >0.90 ? Or is this not the right way to think of a read of 0.31?

Terri or Dr Handsfield, any further thoughts here?

That is not the correct way to think of a .31 Reading. I do not recall seeing and absolute zero on the antibody test. Almost all test results in some value rather than a total zero. This value of .31 is definitely negative. We like a final draw to be done at 12 weeks after any concerning an encounter for greatest accuracy. I would guess, based on this value, that you are going to stay negative but that's just a guess
Terri.
