hello doctors I ask before about the posibility of contacting hiv from reciving unprotected oral sex from a woman and was told, I will frist get struck by a ligthing basically, So I put that to rest since I dont plan on beeing the worlds frist( as some sites very well put it) the only issue I had back then that had me worry was a SORE THROATH this god damn sore throath that wont heal, my frist ENT gave me z pack and 10 mday course of amoxicillin because it hurt when I swallon and had cough and green phlegm, so after ten days no more cough, no more green phlegm and it does not hurt when I swallon, BUT GUESS WHAT ? still an itchy feeling on the back of my throath and sometimes a feel of presure on my ear, sometimes is the left sometimes is the rigth, so back to the ENT is acid reflux, so I took medicine for acid reflux and after 9 days still the same feeling, now they did and endoscopy and did not find anything wrong, exept for the fact that the doctor saw mocus coming from the nose and some small infection still left so he gave me levofloxacin and budesodine to ihale. So here is my question doctor I FOUND OUT ON MY OWN THAT HPV 16 CAN CAUSE THROATH CANCER, I HAVE NEVER TESTED FOR HPV, I HAVE NEVER GIVE ANY WOMAN ORAL SEX, LOTS OF KISSES YES, I KNOWN PROBABLY I HAVE HPV AS ALMOST EVERYONE ELSE, WHAT I WANT TO KNOW IS WHAT ARE MY CHANCES TO HAVE HPV 16, WHAT ARE THE CHANCES OF BECOMING THROATH CANCER, IS THERE SOME SORT OF TREATMENT, AND FINALLY WOULD I DIE FROM IT ? I want to make perfectly clear that I have NO idea if I have hpv16 is just something taht came to my mind because of this God damn feeling on my throath !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  thank you doctors

Welcome back to the Forum.  I'll be happy to comment.  Your symptoms are not due to HPV.  HPV does not cause symptoms when present so my advice is for you to work with your ENT to address your symptoms.  Sometimes after a sore throat the healing process can be frustratingly long.

As for oral HPV it does occur but it is even more rare than genital HPV infections.  Research on the topic of oral HPV is still going on but at this time here is a summary of current understanding:
1.  HPV is much less common in the throat than in the genital tract.  Overall estimates are that about 7% of adults have HPV infection and of those, only 1% are HPV 16.
2.  Like HPV infection at other sites, it appears that with time nearly all HPV infections go away without therapy and cause no health problems.
3.  When HPV 16 causes throat cancer, often the risk is elevated by other factors, like smoking.  The single most important thing a person can do to avail throat cancer is not smoke.  Even in smokers however, HPV-related oral cancer is very, very rare.
4.  There are no tests for oral HPV.  Dentists are trained to look for oral problems  like precancerous lesions so that they can be treated easily and effectively.

Bottom line- your symptoms are NOT due to HPV since oral HPV does not cause symptoms.  Oral cancer is a rare problem and not something for you to worry about other than to not smoke and to go to your dentist regularly.  I hope these comments are helpful.  EWH

ok doctor jus some more questions 1- If I take a HPV test and turns out to be positive (in blood) should I be worry ? because I read that almost everyone has hpv with out complications, and if it turns out to be the hpv 16 (hope not) what are my chances it will turn into throat cancer ? I read a post from DR HH that said "with or with out know of oral hpv, nobody should go around worrying about throath cancer as a result, if you die of cancer someday, the odds are hundreds of time from a more typical tipe of cancer, my advice is to keep things in prespective, and worry more abaout real life risks, not the ones that have one chnace in a million" do you agree ? 3- Doctor from my exposures that are: vaginal sex protected, reciving oral sex unprotected (im a male) and kising, what are my odds of oral hpv ( I have never given a mowan oral sex) 4- Doctor on regrads of HIV from reciving oral sex I know and have been told by EVERYONE I would not get hiv this way, my worry is not from the exposure, my worry ONLY comes from the sore throath i got and still working with my ENT, wich has gotten a lot better is just some minor itchines, so the question regarding my sore throat is: If it were ARS would it be the only simptom I had experience ? and would sore throat from hiv would have lasted this long ? or would have been for like two weeks and the would of gone away ? and one final random question doc, I know your not an ENT but, mine told me that is NOT all that strange to have prolonged throath or ear issues, he even had a lady who took her 6 months to get rid of her allergies and sinus problems ? Do you know or consider my situation in any way throath cancer related ? I have done an endoscopy of my throat all the way to my esophagus and a cat scan and no abnormalities were found or tumors for that matter, only the cat scan showed some congestion on the sinus area, so im hoping that is what is causing me this prolonged itchy sensation and sometimes a feeling of presure on my ear. thanks doc for your time I would really aprreciette your answers, stay well

Thanks for your follow-up questions.

1.  There are no approved tests for HPV in men and certainly no blood tests.  If you get one and it is positive, I would not worry because, as you point out, just about everyone already has it and almost none of those people get cancer. I agree with what Dr. Handsfield has said.
2.  No question.
3.  Your risk of oral HPV from genital sex, receiving oral sex, and kissing is close to zero.  I would not worry about oral HPV.
4.  There are many, many reasons for sore throats.  Nothing you have written suggests in any way that your sore throat is due to HIV or HPV.  Typically the sore throat of HIV begins to get better in a week or so.
5.  I agree with your ENT.  it is not all that unusual for sore throats to linger and to improve slowly.  There is nothing in what you have written to suggest that you should be worried about throat cancer.  If you did, the endoscopy would have seen it.

Please don't worry.  Take care.  EWH

So doctor given my exposures three diferent woman each time unprotected blow job and protected vaginal sex, do you think I have adquiere HIV ? this is the way I see it: frist the woman needs to be hiv positive, in my city there are 5,000 people living with hiv from a million persons and most of the hiv positive persons are MEN and since im heterosexual, well you get the point, but let´s say ONE woman was hiv+, now on to the exposure, vaginal sex with condom, if you wear a condom from my understanding you SHOULD be safe, and if you add the fact that sometimes vaginal sex WITHOUT a condom does not leed to infection, I think my odds for contracting hiv from vaginal sex with condom would be like 1 in a thousend ( I supose) wich then leave us with reciving oral sex unprotected(blow job)everyone keeps telling me TO FORGET ABOUT THE BLOW job, so there you have it doc, can you please put a number on my risk for hiv ?
questions
1- If you adquiere an std do you have to also ALWAYS  get hiv as well ?
2- If im 40 years of age and I turn out to be hiv+, taking pills and all that crap, how long can I live?
3 How often do people with hiv have complications, if they are living healthy and taking the pills ?
4-what is the most common sexual practice, you have come across in you life, that is responsible for adquiring hiv?

final answers

HIV is not acquired by receipt of oral sex. your receipt of oral sex is not a risk factor for HIV, nor is condom protected sex when a condom is worn throughout sex.  If those are you only exposures, you are not at risk for HIV.

In answer to your specific questions:
1- If you adquiere an std do you have to also ALWAYS  get hiv as well ?
No.  Acquiring other STIs increases your risk of getting HIV slightly but most people who get other STIs do not get HIV.

2- If im 40 years of age and I turn out to be hiv+, taking pills and all that crap, how long can I live?
With modern treatment, most HIV infected persons who take anti-HIV therapy live a normal lifespan.

3 How often do people with hiv have complications, if they are living healthy and taking the pills ?
Rarely, if at all.

4-what is the most common sexual practice, you have come across in you life, that is responsible for adquiring hiv?
The highest risk sex act for acquisition of HIV is receptive rectal intercourse.

Please note that the forum does not permit repeated anxiety driven questions by the same users. This will have to be your last one; future new questions on this topic will be deleted without reply and without refund of your posting fee. This policy is based on compassion, not criticism, and is designed to reduce temptations to keep paying for questions with obvious answers; because experience shows that continued answers tends to simply prolong such anxieties, when the real answer normally should be professional counseling; and because such questions have little.

educational value for other users, one of the forum's main purposes. I trust you will understand.

This is my 3rd and therefor final reply to your questions.  The thread will be closed without further answers later today.  Take care.  EWH
