[Question #4158] Trichomoniasis- Whats the deal?

Hi All,

I'm really confused by the information online regarding Trichomoniasis. Can it be passed on via unprotected Oral- receiving and giving a blowjob and can it be passed on via Anal Sex?

Some websites say it can only be passed on vaginally and some say it can be passed on through all types of sex!

Also it says some men can clear it out of their system within a week or two? Really confused by all the conflicting information!

Just looking for clarity.

Welcome to the Forum and thanks for your question.  Trichomoniasis is a relatively common genital infection caused by a parasite, Trichamonas vaginalis in women which can cause either symptomatic or asymptomatic urethral infection in men.  The infection can occur in women with or without symptoms.  There is no evidence that the infection occurs in the throat or that it can be acquired or transmitted through oral sex.  While logically rectal infection might occur, there are not a lot of data on it, nor is testing currently.

Current evidence does suggest that some men who have a positive test and then return for treatment following the positive test will have negative tests indicating that the infection has been cleared.  The precise proportion in whom this occurs is around 20% at two weeks..

I hope this information is helpful.  More sensitive, PCR-based tests which make testing for trichomoniasis more sensitive and easier to perform have brought made some of this information only recently available so misunderstanding is pretty common.  EWH

Hi Dr Hook,

Thanks for the information- really good stuff!

I had full testing for all STI’s after a recent exposure and everything came back negative within the allocated test period!

I hadn’t heard of Trich before and nor do I believe I’ve been tested for it....

My exposure was oral( giving and receiving)  and rimming  (receiving only) with a man ( I too am also male) and very brief anal sex! (Less than 30 seconds and I was the top) based on this information would I need testing for Trich?

Thanks for your thanks.  I see no reason whatsoever for you to have any concerns about trichomoniasis.   EWH

Is that because it’s not transmitted between men? I also read it’s more a vaginal infection and likely to be transmitted between a woman and a man? Just to clarify, I don’t need a test?

Correct.  You do not need a test.   It does not cause oral infection and when it occurs in men who acquire the infection from women, the infection is most often asymptomatic and transient.  EWH

Hi Dr ,

Thanks for claryfying and just one last thing before you end the thread.

It’s been 8 weeks since my exposure, would Trich have cleared up on its own in this time, had I been infected?

When you say correct, do you mean Correct as in is not transmitted male to male?

Yes, trich would have most likely cleared.  More importantly, in your case, I am not aware of any data to suggest that trich is transmitted from men to men.  You need not worry.

This concludes this thread.    EWH
