[Question #4208] PCR and Duo Test combo results

Hi. I had a brief risk exposure 35 days ago. The condom broke(1-3second exposure) while having sex with a person we later confirmed was positive. Did my HIV Pcr qualitative(DNA) at 14 days after exposure and also did a duo 4th generation on the 21st and 28th day after exposure, both were negative. Also did an anti-body test at 35 days which came negative. I know I may have overtested, but are a combination of these results re-assuring enough though I know the need for a further confirmatory test on 42 days. Please advise

Welcome to the forum. Thanks for your question.

Your risk actually was probably lower risk than you fear, given only 1-3 seconds exposure (presumably during vaginal or anal sex, right?). In any case, your test results are 100% conclusive. They prove you did not catch HIV and do not need further testing. Although it is technically true that most experts would recommend a final confirmatory antigen-antibody test (4th gen, duo) at 6 weeks, it's optional. The combination of negative DNA at 2 weeks and negative AgAb tests at 21 and 28 days is conclusive. If one more test will give you still more confidence about it, feel free to have the final test as planned. You definitely can expect it to be negative.

I hope this information is helpful. Let me know if anything isn't clear.

Thank you for the reply.
Yes it was vaginal from behind. The condom popped just when we were starting, and upon hearing it, she immediately pushed me off. Strange thing was that my penis tip was still covered by the condom. Upon examination, the condom had wripped from the side.. Anyways, I know these details don't change anything, but thought I should lay them out incase you pickup something different.

Your advice means a lot, been anxious and tense. Can I resume unprotected sex with my wife?

If the head of your penis remained covered, protection against HIV was complete.

Your test results prove for sure you didn't catch HIV, and of course you cannot transmit an infection you don't have. From an HIV perspective, it is entirely safe to have sex with your wife.
