[Question #4246] sex with partner - herpes - not having outbreak- how likely to become infected

I had unprotected sex with someone who has had herpes for years. He was not having an outbreak at the time. I understand that its possible I could still become infected. But how likely is it after just 1 encounter? Very likely - somewhat likely or not likely?? Really worried.

I would say very unlikely. It appears that you are female. If you were having sex twice a week for a year with someone who has genital HSV 2, the odds of becoming infected with 104 encounters per year is about 10%. You do the math - your chance are very low. If you were going to have symptoms, they would usually show up within 2-10 days.
