Good morning, despite your reassurance i continue to worry re hiv and other std's are you convinced that i have no need to test and my worries are anxiety and guilt driven? The fear of passing on an infection is at present all i think about sorry.

I'm sorry you continue to worry about this exposure.  It was no risk.  That said, given your level of anxiety, testing is reasonable, if and only if, you are able to accept and act upon the results.  Currently available tests are amongst the most accurate tests in all of medicine. Thus if cunnilingus was the only exposure of concern, you can completely rule out the possibility of gonorrhea and chlamydia with a throat swab for those organisms at this time.  As for syphilis and HIV, blood tests will be conclusive at 3-4 and 6 weeks respectively.  If you are going to test however, please commit to believing the results when you get them before you test.

Further advice- I urge you not to go to the internet for more "information".  What you will see there is all too often taken out of context, out of date, or just plain wrong.  EWH

Morning doctor, thank you again for your comments and reassurance. I shall have the appropriate tests just to clear my mind, i understand that a 10 day test would cover hiv and syphilis

No, a 10 day test would be conclusive for the infections you are most at risk for- gonorrhea and chlamydia.  From a biological perspective, your blood tests for syphilis will not be conclusive until 3-4 weeks after exposure and your HIV test results will not be conclusive until 6 weeks after exposure.  On the other hand, from a practical perspective, the risk of the encounter you have described for syphilis or HIV is so low that there is really no good medical reason to even need testing- I recommended it onlyto try to help you address your non-science based, emotional and guilt driven concerns about having acquired an STI.  EWH

Hi doctor,i have had swabs for both gonorrhea and clamydia ( both negative) i received the results today, the test i was contemplating to take was a dna pcr test for hiv, just to confirm in my mind what i know that you are correct and you quite rightly consider an irrational fear

Understood.  A negative PCR test for HIV at any time more than 11-14 days after your exposure will provide definitive evidence that you did not get HIV from your encounter of concern.  EWH
