[Question #4278] Std risk

Hi Doctors. I am a married male, my wife and I were our first sexual partners. 10 days ago I made a rather large mistake and acted out on a curiosity while under the influence of alcohol. I had mutual oral sex with another man. He said he was also married and free of stds, but I can't know for sure. It was oral only, both ways, maybe 10 minutes. I have no symptoms after 10 days and I tested negative for gon and chlamidia at 7 days. I am aware stds from oral sex is low risk. Hiv is virtually zero risk. Syphilis is rare and with no visible sores very unlikely. I've heard HPV from a single oral encounter is very rare, maybe 1% or less. Given this information, would you suggest testing? Is it ok to move on with my life and sexual life? Can I chaulk this up to a single stupid mistake that I will never do again (I didn't enjoy it, curiosity is gone now). Or should I be concerned? I know people make mistakes but I'm having a tough time getting over this experience. Thank you very much.

Welcome to the Forum. thanks for your confidence in our site and for your detailed history. From all that you have described, your risk for any STI, including HPV from this encounter is very low and were I you, I would move forward without concern and without further testing. As you point out, few STIs, are transmitted by either giving or receiving oral sex, your partner states he is low risk, and your tests (what sites were tested? Both throat and urethra/urine?) were negative. The risk for HPV from a single encounter is likewise low. Putting all of this together, your risk for any STY is tiny and not a meaningful concern.
I see no need for further testing and would encourage you to work to move forward without continuing concern. EWH

Thank you Doctor. Yes, I was tested for gon and cyph at 7 days both oral and urine. All were negative. No symptoms of either, nor are there any symptoms for syphilis or HSV at 10 days. And there were no sores present at the time. I'm a bit of a worrier, but realize this is likely due to anxiety and guilt. I have found your response to be very helpful, and I will never make a mistake like this again. Thank you very much.

Thanks for the additional information. I know you consider this a misstep but in terms of testing, you have done everything right. I am confident that the challenge going forward for you will be addressing your guilt and that STIs will not be part of the problem. Take care. EWH

Thank you Doctor. I have one final follow-up and then I will be done. Given the near zero risk of HIV and HPV and my negative tests, i will put those to rest. I realize you have said my risk of any STI is tiny and not a meaningful concern. Considering the rarity of acquiring HSV 1 or 2 from oral sex and the absence of any symptoms at day 11, should I be fairly confident that this event would unlikely cause HSV? Thank you so much for your help. I really appreciate your advice.

HSV-2 is not acquired form receipt of oral sex and is not a concern from this exposure. I would not be worried about herpes at this time either. EWH

Thanks for everything. So given the extremely low risk, if I decide to do HIV ab/ag at 27 days should I be good to go? Done now. Thanks much.
