[Question #4298] Drugged incident - no results, very scared

Hi Doctor,

Sorry to bother you again. Just to follow up from the last post, I did receive a negative hiv result on September 5th, at three months time frame. Thank you. A month ago I met a man traveling back from abroad who became an acquaintance though I was reluctant to pursue a friendship as I thought he was slightly unbalanced but did for various reasons, including pressure from a friend I have known for ten  and how I was feeling at the time. He subsequently introduced me to his fiancee, soon to be ex, who I found fairly sweet but also with a lot of issues. After helping to take her to a doctor's appointment, I subsequently went back to their airbnb, where we had dinner and drinks. As the night went on, I blacked out for almost four hours with only vague snapshots of memory, including being in the bathroom with just jeans but no underwear on, and the man in front of me without a shirt on. I do not remember sex or being assaulted. I had no pain the next day but found myself slumped up in an odd position when I woke up at my house. I didn't even think about this possibility but one of my girlfriends said she believes I was drugged. It happened again when I went to a club with this woman (not the man) last saturday night (one week ago). He has been away but I have now ended the friendship with them and blocked them on all methods of communication.  I have had no symptoms since these incidents apart from a dry cough. Subsequently, I took all std tests on Monday, and have received no results. Does this mean that the test is positive? I am very scared. I was not that worried as when I took this woman to the doctor, she received negative std results, they were having unprotected sex. I have never waited this long for results. I went to another clinic to get tested again last night (26 days post exposure.) I am in a difficult situation because I have no idea what happened or what to expect. Any insight would be appreciated. I am also thinking of filing a police report.

Additional information should know is that I have called the clinic and all they say is that the lab has not sent the results. I have never waited more than three days for blood work. Thank you.

One again, as we have discussed, I think you are over-thinking things.  While the incident you describe is rather bizarre, I see no reason for concern.  On occasion it take longer to provide test results based on local staffing and workload.  I am confident your tests will be negative and are likely to be available Monday or Tuesday at the least.  Please don't worry.  EWH

Ok. Thank you. I am also having guilt over having put myself in a dangerous situation by socializing with them. At the time they explained me not having underwear on by the fact they said I wanted to take a shower but I have no recollection of doing that. He also said his shirt was off because he took a shower later that night. I know these people do lie about things but I still feel that sex did not happen and I would have had at least snapshot memories if it had but don't know if I had been drugged. I will post the results once I receive them. Thank you.

I agree.  If you'd had sex with them I would anticipate at least some sort of memory.  I anticipate that your tests will be negative and look forward to hearing of the results from you.  In the interim, please do your best not to worry.  EWH

The result was negative as you predicted.  The result I received was 26 days post exposure. The other clinic just called too and said syphillis, gonorrehea, hep c, chlymidia were negative. I will never put myself in this situation again and always watch my drinks from now on and if I am at someones residence, I will insist on pouring them. `Two questions please. How conclusive is the result 26 days from exposure? This was for the incident at the couple's Airbnb.

Secondly, the incident at the club, I believe I was only blacked out for close to 50 minutes before knowing i needed to get myself home. This incident happened on september, Saturday 15th. So only 6 days before I had the second test. Another woman was in the cab with me up until the last 5 minutes. Do you think I should retest in 4 weeks to cover this too?

I would consider your chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and hepatitis results conclusive at this time.  Your HIV result is more than 99% conclusive but current guidelines state that HIV tests are not conclusively negative until 6 weeks after an exposure.  In your case, personally, I would consider your results conclusive even though technically you should wait until 42 days after exposure to be "officially" and conclusively negative.

The second instance was even less likely to lead to infection than the first (in my opinion).  Personally, I would not worry further.

Hope this helps.  EWH
