[Question #4313] ONE MORE FOLLOW UP TO 3975 HOT TUB ADVENTURE/HIV TEST

Hello again doctors. I am truly sorry to bother you with this again, but I need a little reassurance. After my encounter with a female friend in a hot tub, (lots of touching, kissing, mutual masturbation but no penetrative sex of any kind)  I decided to get tested for gonorrhea, syphilis, and chlamydia. All came back negative. I asked about the possibility of HIV transmission and both Dr. Hook and Dr. Handsfield said it was virtually a no-risk event. I did decide to get the Alere rapid point-of-care HIV test done at a local health clinic  (near certain its the combo 4th gen test) at 10 weeks from the event (event was July 13, test was Sept 20) and it too was negative. My question is - is the Alere rapid test conclusive at 10 weeks? Can I trust these results or do I need to be retested again at 12 weeks? Thanks much for all you do!

And  just to clariy, the Alere test was the finger-stick blod test.

The Alere Determine HIV1/2 fingerstick test is 4th generiation, i.e. antigen-antibody. Like all such tests, it is 100% conclusive any time more than 6 weeks after exposure. You don't need another test at 12 weeks or any other time.
